বিভূতিভূষণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের জন্ম ১৮৯৪ সালের ১২ই সেপ্টেম্বর চব্বিশ পরগনা জেলার মুরাতিপুর গ্রামে, মাতুলালয়ে। তাঁর পৈতৃক বাড়ি পশ্চিমবঙ্গের চব্বিশ পরগনা জেলার বারাকপুর গ্রামে। তাঁর বাল্য ও কৈশোরকাল কেটেছে দারিদ্র্যের মধ্যে। তাঁর মাতার নাম মৃণালিনী দেবী। পিতা মহানন্দ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়ের পেশা ছিল কথকতা ও পৌরোহিত।
কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এম এ পড়াকালে (১৯১৮) তাঁর প্রথম স্ত্রীর মৃত্যু ঘটলে প্রাতিষ্ঠানিক শিক্ষা অসমাপ্ত থাকে। অতঃপর স্কুল শিক্ষকতাসহ নানা পেশায় তাঁর জীবন অতিবাহিত হয়। এর বাইশ বছর পরে তিনি দ্বিতীয়বার বিয়ে করেন (১৯৪০)। ছোটগল্প, উপন্যাস, দিনলিপি ও ভ্রমন-কাহিনী রচনার মধ্যেই তিনি জীবনের আনন্দ খুঁজে পান। তাঁর রচিত সাহিত্যে প্রকৃতি ও মানবজীবন এক অখন্ড অবিচ্ছিন্ন সত্তায় সমন্বিত হয়েছে।
তাঁর সাহিত্যে প্রকৃতির অনাবিল সৌন্দর্য ও গ্রামবাংলার সাধারণ মানুষের জীবনাচরণের সজীব ও নিখুঁত চিত্র অঙ্কিত হয়েছে। "পথের পাঁচালী", "অপরাজিত", উপন্যাস যেমন তাঁর শ্রেষ্ঠ কীর্তি তেমনি বাংলা সাহিত্যেরো অমূল্য সম্পদ।
তাঁর অন্যান্য রচনার মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য উপন্যাসঃ "আরণ্যক", "ইছামতী"; গল্পগ্রন্থঃ "মেঘমল্লার", "মৌরীফুল"; ভ্রমণ-দিনলিপিঃ "তৃণাঙ্কুর", "স্মৃতির রেখা"; কিশোর উপন্যাসঃ "চাদের পাহাড়", "মিসমিদের কবচ", "হীরামানিক জ্বলে"। ১৯৫০ সালের ১লা নভেম্ব্র তিনি মৃত্যু বরণ করে।

Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay was born on 12 September 1894 in the village of Muratipur in the 24 Parganas district, at his maternal uncle's house. His ancestral home is in the village of Barakpur in the 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. He spent his childhood and adolescence in poverty. His mother's name was Mrinalini Devi. Father Mahananda Bandyopadhyay's profession was narration and priesthood.
While studying for his MA at Calcutta University (1918), his first wife died and his formal education was incomplete. After that he spent his life in various professions including school teaching. Twenty-two years later, she married for the second time (1940). He found the joy of life in writing short stories, novels, diaries and travelogues. In his literature, nature and human life have been integrated into one unbroken entity.
His literature depicts the incomparable beauty of nature and the life of the common people of rural Bengal. "Pather Panchali", "Aparajit", novels are his best works as well as invaluable resources of Bengali literature. Notable novels among his other works include: Aranyaka, Ichhamati; Story books: "Meghmallar", "Mauriful"; Travel diary: "Trinagkur", "line of memory"; Teenage novels: "Chander Pahar", "Mismider Kabach", "Hiramanik Jwale". He died on November 1, 1950.
