মুহাম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ ১৮৮৫ সালের ১০ জুলাই ভারতের পশ্চিমবঙ্গের চব্বিশ পরগণা জেলার পেয়ারা গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তিনি বহুভাষাবিদ ও পন্ডিত হিসেবে খ্যাত। মুহাম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ ১৯১০ সালে কলকাতা সিটি কলেজ থেকে সংস্কৃতে বি.এ. অনার্স ও ১৯১২ সালে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ভাষাতত্ত্বে এম.এ পাস করেন।
তিনি ছিলেন কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ভাষাতত্ত্ব বিভাগের প্রথম ছাত্র। পরে তিনি প্যারির সোরবন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে ডক্টর অব লিটারেচার ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন। বাংলা ভাষা ও সাহিত্যের ইতিহাস রচনায় তিনি অসাধারণ পান্ডিত্যের পরিচয় দিয়েছেন। বাংলা ব্যাকরণ রচনাতেও তাঁর অবদান স্মরনীয়। কর্মজীবনে তিনি ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে বাংলা বিভাগে অধ্যাপনা করেছেন।
ভাষা ও সাহিত্য নিয়ে গবেষণার স্বীকৃতি হিসেবে তিনি অনেক পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন। ছোটদের জন্য তাঁর লেখা রচনাগুলোর মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হচ্ছেঃ "শেষ নবীর সন্ধানে" ও "গল্প মঞ্জুরী" ইত্যাদি। তাঁর সম্পাদনায় শিশু পত্রিকা "আঙুর" প্রকাশিত হয়। "বাংলা ভাষার আঞ্চলিক অভিধান" সম্পাদনা তাঁর অসামান্য কীর্তি। মুহাম্মদ শহীদুল্লাহ ১৯৬৯ সালের ১৩জুলাই ঢাকায় মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।

Author Introduction 'Muhammad Shahidullah'
Muhammad Shahidullah was born on 10 July 1885 in the village of Peyara in the 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, India. He is known as a multilingualist and scholar. Muhammad Shahidullah graduated from Calcutta City College in 1910 with a B.A. in Sanskrit. Honors and MA in Linguistics from Calcutta University in 1912.
He was the first student of the Department of Linguistics at Calcutta University. He later earned a Doctor of Literature degree from the Sorbonne University in Paris. He has shown remarkable erudition in writing the history of Bengali language and literature. His contribution in composing Bengali grammar is also memorable. During his career he has taught Bangla at Dhaka University and Rajshahi University.
He has received numerous awards in recognition of his research on language and literature. Notable among his works for children are: "In Search of the Last Prophet" and "Grant of Stories". The children's magazine "Angur" was published under his editorship. Editing "Regional Dictionary of Bengali Language" is his outstanding achievement. Muhammad Shahidullah died on 13 July 1969 in Dhaka.
