সুকান্ত ভট্টাচার্য ১৯২৬ সালের ১৫ আগস্ট কলকাতায় তাঁর মাতুলালয়ে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। তাঁর পৈতৃক নিবাস গোপালগঞ্জের কোটালিপাড়ায়। নিম্ন মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবারের এই সন্তান অল্প বয়সেই শোষিত-নিপীড়িত মানুষের মুক্তির আন্দোলনে নিজেকে সম্পৃক্ত করে তোলেন।
খ্যাতি অর্জন করেন বামপন্থি-বিপ্লবী কবি হিসেবে। বঞ্চনাকাতর মানুষের জীবন যন্ত্রণার চিত্র যেমন তাঁর কবিতায় অঙ্কিত হয়েছে তেমনি উচ্চারিত হয়েছে প্রতিবাদ ও বিদ্রোহের সুর। সেকালের দৈনিক পত্রিকা "স্বাধীনতা"র কিশোর সভা অংশের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সম্পাদক ছিলেন তিনি। আমৃত্যু তিনি এ দায়িত্ব পালন করেন। তাঁর কবিতায় বলিষ্ঠভাবে উচ্চারিত হয়েছে মানবমুক্তির জয়গান।
তাঁর রচিত কাব্যগ্রন্থের নামঃ "ছাড়পত্র", "ঘুম নেই", "পূর্বাভাস", "অভিযান", "হরতাল", "গীতিগুচ্ছ" ইত্যাদি। ১৯৪৭ সালের ১৩ মে মাত্র একুশ বছর বয়সে যক্ষ্মায় আক্রান্ত হয়ে কলকাতায় এই কবির মৃত্যু ঘটে।

Author Introduction 'Sukanta Bhattacharya'
Sukanta Bhattacharya was born on 15 August 1926 at his maternal uncle's house in Calcutta. His ancestral home is at Kotalipara in Gopalganj. At an early age, this child of a lower middle class family became involved in the liberation movement of the exploited and oppressed people.
He gained fame as a leftist-revolutionary poet. The tone of protest and rebellion has been uttered as his poems depict the suffering of the deprived people. He was the founding editor of the Kishore Sabha section of the then daily Swadhinata. He performed this duty till his death. The triumph of human liberation has been strongly expressed in his poems.
The names of his books of poetry are: "Chharpatra", "Ghum Nei", "Purvabhas", "Abhiyan", "Hartal", "Gitiguchho" etc. He died of tuberculosis in Calcutta on 13 May 1947 at the age of twenty-one.
