সৈয়দ মুজতবা আলী ১৯০৪ সালের ১৩ সেপ্টেম্বর আসামের করিমগঞ্জে জন্মগ্রহন করেন। বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ রম্যরচনাকার ও অনন্য গদ্যশৈলীর স্রষ্টা সৈয়দ মুজতবা আলী। রবীন্দ্রনাথের স্নেহসান্নিধ্যে পাঁচ বছর লেখাপড়ার পর তিনি শান্তিনিকেতন থেকে স্নাতক হন। এছাড়া তিনি আলীগড়
কলেজ, বার্লিন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় ও কায়রোর আল-আজহার বিশ্ববিদ্যালেও অধ্যয়ন করেছেন।
কর্মজীবনে তিনি কলকাতা ও বিশ্বভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং কাবুল কৃষি কলেজে কিছুকাল অধ্যাপনা করেছেন। ভ্রমণের নেশা ছিল তাঁর প্রবল। তিনি বিশ্বের বিভিন্ন দেশ ঘুরেছেন।
সৈয়দ মুজতবা আলী ফরাসি, জার্মান, ইতালীয়, ইংরেজি, আরবি, উর্দু, হিন্দি, সংস্কৃত, গুজরাটি, মারাঠি ইত্যাদি প্রায় ১৫টি ভাষায় পারদর্শী ছিলেন। তিনি ৪টি উপন্যাস, ২টি গল্পগ্রন্থ এবং বেশকিছু রম্যরচনা ও ভ্রমণকাহিনী লিখেছেন।
"দেশে বিদেশে" নামক বিখ্যাত ভ্রমণকাহিনীটি তিনি রচনা করেছেন কাবুল কলেজে শিক্ষকতা করারসময়। কিশোরদের জন্য রচিত তাঁর অন্যতম ভ্রমণ কাহিনী হচ্ছে "জলে ডাঙায়" । বৈঠকি চালে সরস কৌতুকময় রম্যরচনার জন্য সৈয়দ মুজতবা আলী বাংলা সাহিত্যে স্মরণীয় হয়ে আছেন।
১৯৭৪ সালের ১১ ফেব্রুয়ারি তিনি ঢাকায় মৃত্যুবরণ করেন।

Syed Mujtaba Ali was born on 13 September 1904 in Karimganj, Assam. Syed Mujtaba Ali is one of the best composers of Bengali literature and the creator of a unique prose style. He graduated from Santiniketan after five years of study in the company of Rabindranath. He has also studied at Aligarh College, University of Berlin and Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
During his career he taught for some time at Calcutta and Biswa-Bharati University and Kabul Agricultural College. He was addicted to travel. He has traveled around the world.
Syed Mujtaba Ali was fluent in French, German, Italian, English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi, Sanskrit, Gujarati, Marathi and about 15 other languages. He has written 4 novels, 2 short stories and a number of comics and travelogues.
He wrote the famous travel story "Deshe Bideshe" while teaching at Kabul College. One of his travel stories written for teenagers is "Jwale Dangai". Syed Mujtaba Ali is remembered in Bengali literature for his succulent humorous compositions during the meeting.
He died on 11 February 1974 in Dhaka.
